Joy that Transcends
This painting was inspired by a video I saw recently. It was of a pastor as he explained the difference between joy and happiness. He used two balloons to illustrate the difference—one filled with regular air, and the other with helium.
He compared the air-filled balloon to happiness: it needs an outside force to lift it, and it floats for a moment before coming back down. The helium balloon, on the other hand, just floats. It’s effortless! He explained that while both balloons are made from the same material, what’s inside them makes all the difference.
Happiness depends on external things—people, situations, or stuff that give us a temporary high. But the pursuit of happiness can leave us feeling deflated when those external things aren’t enough to keep us afloat.
Joy, however, comes from within. It’s rooted in the unchanging nature of God’s presence. It’s a joy that never fades. This kind of joy isn’t dependent on our circumstances; it’s something we can choose to embrace no matter what’s going on around us. Like the helium balloon, it’s not the external circumstances that lift us up—it’s what’s inside us that makes us rise.
